Wouldn´t something like that be a great additional core feature for DWB maybe?

            Yes, it's something I'll consider.

This wasn't a better way of doing it, so I deleted it.

(Been a bit amused about the term "parallax effects" in the description of Altitude. I do like the gradients though. Well, that one will sell....) Thanks for the update!

The Front-Page is really nice, but they forgot to style the inner pages.

Yeah, I´m always ambivalent about how much flat is too flat.... LOL

This looks like exactly what I need ... but I can't get it to work ! Did I miss something out ?

I put the PHP code into Custom Functions.
I put the CSS into Custom CSS

And ... nothing happened. I was expecting some new widgets to be available in 'Appearance > Widgets' but they aren't there. Wonder if I've misunderstood something here (I'm having a bad day!)

Most likely, the checkbox "Affect Admin" in your "Functions" tab isn´t checked. It´s necessary to make the widget area appear in your backend. Look closely, because this code was made for an EZ frontpage, so the widget(s) will only appear there. Otherwise you´d have to change the hook location(s)!
